More companies have incorporated sustainable development goal, ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance), or Co-Benefits into their business considerations in order to produce better social impact.
The second Round Table
How Does MNCs in China Lead in Social Responsibilities, and Thoughts on Building Legacy
The theme of the second Round Table was How Does MNCs in China Lead in Social Responsibilities, and Thoughts on Building Legacy. Derek Zhang, Executive Editor of Fortune China, the host, together with two entrepreneurs with social responsibility and social innovation leadership --- Sam Sun, Co-Founder and Partner of VS Partners, and Joey Wat, CEO of Yum! China, jointly discussed how Chinese companies could play a pioneering role in social responsibility and establish cross-generational influence.
Joey Wat, as a leader of a large company in Chinese market, illustrated the significance of outstanding cultural beliefs for a company in the second forum. She emphasized that all great companies should have a beautiful soul.
Sam Sun, Co-Founder and Partner of VS Partners, based on years of experience as a professional manager, believes that the value of a company has changed from the value of a single stockholder to the value of more comprehensive stakeholders. At the same time, Sam stressed that the original intention of enterprises was to solve social problems. The capital should maintain a modest attitude to avoid another big social problem while solving one.
The third Round Table
How Do Young Generation of Entrepreneurs Think about Purpose of Entrepreneurship,
Personal Wealth and Contribution to Society
The third Round Table discussed How Do Young Generation of Entrepreneurs Think about Purpose of Entrepreneurship, Personal Wealth and Contribution to Society. Vanessa Xu, Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of VS Partners, and Yang Linfeng, CEO of Onion Academy, were invited to discuss about opinions of young entrepreneurs in the new era on establishing great companies
As an Internet-focused entrepreneur, Linfeng began with online education and mentioned that the original intention of starting a business is to fundamentally solve social problems and promote education equity to a certain extent.
Discussing with young entrepreneur with aspirations, Vanessa Xu, Managing Partner, and Chief Investment Officer of VS Partners, stated that the essence of innovation was to discover a social problem and find an effective way to solve it. Enterprises could also obtain reasonable profits during the process. The more difficult of the process, the more challenge to a business organization if it really tries to solve practical problems and meet market demands. Companies that can sustain across business cycles with tremendous changes often are built with a foundation more than commercial profits, culture, and the founder's personal aspirations, and are based on a higher vision and values aligned with human nature. Vanessa also emphasized that maintaining the Co-Benefits and long-termism was the basic support to shape these visions and values.
In the post-Covid era, the international communication and development are impeded and full of uncertainties. The companies, and entrepreneurs with the spirit of innovation are the mainstream power to drag the world out of epidemic shadow, and promote interconnected and co-benefit society. Entrepreneurs, investors and startups globally with social responsibility need to think about how companies and individuals create and preserve value for the world in addition to "creating profits."
